Were you there?! Inspired by popular photography from a century ago where thousands of service members and other groups were arranged artfully to form American patriotic symbols, on April 10 the 8th TSC tested out some of their plans for the command’s own Living Insignia event coming up this June. During World War I, these military formations came to serve as rallying points to support American involvement in the war and to ward off isolationist tendencies.
Some formations took 10-20,000 Soldiers. We won’t need that many, and we have the help of our talented 14th Engineer Detachment, 84th Engineer Battalion helping with the project planning and technical expertise.
Thank you again to the Soldiers from the 130th Engineer Brigade and 8th Military Police Brigade who helped in our rehearsal! We’ll see you out there in June!

Soldiers from #JointTeamHawaii, the top culinary team in the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) are currently in New Zealand at the invitation of the NZDF to participate in the annual Roy Smith Catering Competition.
In its 41st year, the competition demonstrates the skills and techniques taught to NZDF chefs and stewards and puts them to the test in a competitive and challenging environment.
The preparation and service of appealing and nutritious meals to personnel is a critical function and a valued and skilled role within the NZDF. The Roy Smith Catering Competition is a great opportunity for trainees to put on the plate what they’ve been learning in the classroom.
The event is takes place 9-11 April at the Defence Catering School, Devonport Naval Base, and is named in memory of Lance Corporal Roy Smith, a chef with Central Company, Wellington Platoon, who was killed in a train accident in 1976.
