“She clearly knew that the Nazis would eventually come for her and her children as well,” Marguerite Mishkin said as she told her incredible story of a being a Holocaust child survivor as the guest speaker for RIA’s Holocaust Days of Remembrance Observance at Heritage Hall April 18.

"They can't fight without what we do," said Perna. "We are responsible for everything. We are responsible for the materiel readiness of all the equipment in the entire force.

Holocaust child survivor shares story at RIA

Holocaust child survivor Marguerite Mishkin told her story of being a Jewish child in Belgium during World War II and its aftermath at a remembrance observance April 18 in Heritage Hall at Rock Island Arsenal, Illinois. Mishkin and her older sister were adopted by a family from Chicago in 1950. The event was hosted by the U.S. Army Sustainment Command Equal Opportunity Office. Under Secretary of the Army Ryan D. McCarthy received a firsthand look of how the men and women of the Rock Island Arsenal support military readiness through logistics, munitions, manufacturing and mobilization. During his time, McCarthy learned about the Army Sustainment Command, Joint Munitions Command, First Army and toured the Rock Island Arsenal Joint Manufacturing and Technology Center.

Mmmm… Smoothies!

A variety of delicious smoothies were prepared by and served to employees of the U.S. Army Sustainment Command on Rock Island Arsenal on April 12, designated as Smoothie Day. Smoothie Day took place on Day 29 of the Fit Food Challenge, an eight-week initiative sponsored by ASC’s Wellness Division designed to promote healthy eating habits.

The smoothies served on Smoothie Day were made of fruits, vegetables and other healthful ingredients. Unlike many commercial soft drinks, the smoothies were low in added sugar and high in vitamins and protein.

Smoothie recipes are available to ASC employees on the Fit Food Challenge Sharepoint site, at https://asc.aep.army.mil/sites/g1/G1HRW/FFC/SitePages/Community%20Home.aspx (click on the “Recipe Book” tab on the right); this is a secure site available only to those holding a common access card.

Vietnam War vet tells amazing story of resilience

Bill “Hawk” Albracht shared his story of him and his Soldiers successfully escaping and evading enemy forces in the darkness of night after his unit fought fiercely for five days at Firebase Kate in South Vietnam. The U.S. Army Sustainment Command Wellness Division’s Resilience Program sponsored the event held April 11 in Heritage Hall at Rock Island Arsenal to a packed house. Jon Micheal Connor, ASC Public Affairs, has this video report.

Rock Island Arsenal AER campaign underway

“Key Persons” are conducting “face-to-face” contact with all Soldiers assigned to Rock Island Arsenal so they know the purpose of the Army Emergency Relief campaign and are afforded an opportunity to donate. The RIA AER Campaign ends April 30. According to the Operation Order that went out via email to the workforce, retired Soldiers and civilian personnel may participate too. Contact your organization’s AER representative for more information.

Two 404th Army Field Support Brigade entities received first-place awards at the major command level in this year’s Department of the Army Safety Award Program.

Those attending ASC’s three-day Senior Leader Forum discussed some of the most challenging issues the command faces today, including command structure, modernization and increased requirements. ASC continues to prioritize #Readiness worldwide.

Attendees included the current and future commanders of ASC’s seven Army Field Support Brigades. Also attending were many of the commanders for ASC’s Army Field Support Battalions and key personnel from the ASC Headquarters.

The RIA Fire Department is celebrating its 100th anniversary this week. On April 6, Friday, the active and retired fire personnel will meet for an in-house breakfast. A public ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. in the station followed by an open house with cake and punch offered. At 3 p.m., fire personnel will be at the Lock & Dam Lounge in Bldg. 60 to participate in RIA's monthly First Friday event. Come and meet them!
