Nat Shaffir was born on a Romanian dairy farm and had what he called a “good life,” going to kindergarten and first grade with many Jewish and non-Jewish friends, until the local priest led the Nazis to his mom, dad and two older sisters. The priest had been a weekly visitor for years, always asking for donations for his struggling congregants. #Holocaust

Happy 80th birthday to that stalwart producer of federal office work - the government pen! The pen came out of legislation passed in 1972, and for something so simple it has some pretty rigorous specifications.

Skilcraft pens are still made according to the original 16-page specifications from GSA. Such things as:

- Must be able to write continuously for a mile and in temperatures up to 160 degrees and down to 40 degrees below zero.

- Blobs shall not average more than 15 per 1,000 feet of writing, with a maximum of 25 for any 1,000-foot increment.

- Writing shall not be completely removed after two applications of chemical bleach.

They've even saved lives, the lower outer barrel of the pen has been used as a temporary tracheotomy tube in emergency situations.

Though technology has lessened the use of the pens slightly, they are still in high demand. The vendor makes about 4 million pens a year.

By examining Enterprise Business System reports, the #DLAEnergy Customer Relationship Management team discovered that jet fuel use at NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility increased from 50,000 gallons per year in 2012 to more than 500,000 gallons per year in 2016. This stark increase in fuel consumption prompted NASA to review their current vendor contract agreement and begin exploring new strategic alliances with DLA Energy.
