SUBASE Recycling Reminder

It is everyone's responsibility at Naval Submarine Base New London to recycle and help lower our solid waste costs. It is not only the right thing to do, but it is the law in the State of Connecticut.

The installation Integrated Solid Waste/Recycling Operations Manager Scott Mello will help you with any of your recycling questions or needs.

Mr. Mello can be reached at (401)413-8204 or you can contact SUBASE Recycling Specialist Robert Barner @ 860-694-4617.

Please see the attachment for a list of items of what we need
to recycle and how.

Please do not to contaminate recycling dumpsters
with trash.

Interesting Facts:

The Department of Defense has set a goal of recycling at least 50% of non-hazardous solid waste, not including construction and demolition waste, we have achieved that here at SUBASE and currently have a diversion rate of 60% and have achieved this since 2013!

FY17 the installation recycled over 2 million lbs.! Recycling one ton of paper saves seven thousand gallons of water.

It takes 17 trees to make one ton of paper. Consider that the next time you choose to print out a directory you could easily reference on line.

The following paper items that can be recycled are all colored paper, newspapers, phonebooks, magazines, all types of folders and envelope cardboard should be flattened and placed only in the blue single stream dumpsters.

Here at SUBASE all glass and #1 thru #7 plastics are accepted and should be rinsed before placing blue dumpster. Did you know that glass never wears out and can be recycled forever? Recycling one glass bottle saves enough electricity to light a 100-watt bulb for four hours.

Celebration to highlight "Sesquicentennial," of a U.S. Navy installation being established in Connecticut

GROTON, Conn. – State and local officials will join the Navy in celebrating a milestone one-hundred and fifty years in the making - the "Sesquicentennial," of a U.S. Navy installation being established in Connecticut - during a special event at 1 p.m., Wednesday, April 11, at the Historic Ship Nautilus and Submarine Force Museum.
Naval Submarine Base New London (SUBASE) had its beginning as a naval yard and storage depot on April 11, 1868, when a Deed of Gift from the State of Connecticut and City of New London was signed, conveyed, and presented to Secretary of the Navy Gideon Welles.
Featured speakers for the event are anticipated to be Mayor Michael Passero of the City of New London; Mr. Bob Ross, Executive Director of Connecticut's Office of Military Affairs; Rear Admiral James Pitts, Commander, Undersea Warfighting Development Center; and, Captain Paul Whitescarver, Commanding Officer of SUBASE.
During the celebration, the Navy will also mark the birthday of the U.S. Submarine Force. One-hundred and eighteen years ago on April 11, 1900, the United States Navy purchased Holland VI, a 53 foot long, 10 and a quarter foot diameter, experimental submarine from John P. Holland and the Holland Torpedo Boat Company. It would become the nation's first commissioned submarine, USS Holland, and the forerunner of the modern U.S. Submarine Force.
The celebration will include ceremonial bell ringing: ringing out another year of base and submarine force service to the nation, and ringing in a new year of service. A cake cutting and cake for all attendees will conclude the festivities.
This special celebration is free and open to the public.
The Historic Ship Nautilus and Submarine Force Museum are located at 1 Crystal Lake Road, Groton, Conn., 06340.

The world celebrates earth day Sunday April 22 this year and once again SUBASE challenges local commands and activities to make a difference by thinking globally and acting locally through the Eleventh Annual Earth Day Challenge.

Last year a score of commands and activities and more than 200 Sailors and civilians participated in an array of environmentally focused community outreach events in honor of earth day.

This year SUBASE will again be partnering with regional state parks, towns, and local land conservancies to undertake environmental stewardship projects.

Your help is needed to participate in work crews assisting our local land managers to clean-up trails and shorelines, pick up debris and remove invasive plant species. Projects are available to all levels of physical ability and you will be helping the environment and supporting your local communities at the same time.

For more information about how to volunteer, contact your command community service coordinator or call the SUBASE Public Affairs Office at 860-694-5980.

Additionally, on 20 April, Subase CMC encourages all tenant commands to police around their buildings and areas, and make a difference on SUBASE. Separate lawn debris and trash, and place lawn debris and trash in clear trash bags for SUBASE 1st LT to retrieve throughout the day. If you require clear trash bags please contact SUBASE 1st LT at 860-694-4499.
