Hampton Roads cities are under a “Slight” risk for severe weather tonight (level 2 of 5 on the severe risk scale). Damaging winds, heavy rain, and tornadoes are possible. Storms will be moving through between 11pm tonight and 7am Monday morning. Monitor weather alert radios and local media for issuance of any watches or warnings. Power outages are possible due to strong winds.

Current forecasts for the 2018 hurricane season show what could be another above average season. NAVSTA Norfolk will host a HURREX 18/Hurricane Preparedness brief on Tuesday 10 April, 2018 in the building C-9 auditorium located onboard NAVSTA Norfolk at intersection of Gilbert Street and Bacon Avenue. This brief will help tenant commands in meeting expectations required during the annual HURREX hurricane exercise which will be conducted by Fleet Forces Command and Commander, Navy Instalations Command 24APR18 to 11MAY18. Although targeted to tenant command destructive weather/emergency management POCs, this brief is open to command Ombudsman and family members as well and will help them prepare for the upcoming hurricane season. Hurricane preparedness and Ready Navy materials will be available on a first come, first served basis. Naval Station Norfolk held it's quarterly Parenthood Fair this morning at the Norfolk Navy Exchange. Representatives from Fleet and Family Support Center, Child and Youth, NMCRS, MWR Fitness, Command Career Counselor, Housing, Tricare, WIC and more were on hand to answer questions and provide information to Sailors.

Bainbridge Ave between Gilbert St. and Moffet Ave/Aircraft Tow Way will be closed during the hours of 6:30pm to 4:30am on Tuesday and Wednesday 27-28 March in support of water main replacement.

Students at Norfolk's Southside STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Academy learn about Naval Station Norfolk and Public Affairs at the shool's career day. The event included a career-based costume contest by the students in grades kindergarten through 5th grade and a large number of booths set up by colleges and organizations from the Hampton Roads area. Hands-on activities created by the attendees helped the students learn and understand what the various programs do.

The Coast Guard and Navy will be conducting a training exercise tonight in the vicinity of Craney Island. The exercise will involve the use of blanks. This is a scheduled training exercise and is not in response to a specific threat.

There is no severe weather forecast for our area today so the Statewide Tornado Exercise is still a go and will be held on NAVSTA Norfolk from 0945-1000. Basewide announcements, sirens and tones will be heard from the Mass Notification System. Please share your exercise photos with us, send to navstanorfolk.eoc@navy.mil

As we move into the severe weather season, please join Naval Station Norfolk in participating in the 2018 Virginia Statewide Tornado Exercise, Tuesday 20 MAR 2018. The exercise will begin at 0945 with an exercise Tornado Warning being issued by the National Weather Service via Weather Alert radios and on local media stations. NAVSTA Norfolk will issue exercise announcements that will begin and end with the words "Exercise Exercise Exercise." The "Take Cover" siren will be sounded over outdoor mass notification system speakers. This siren may be heard by personnel outside the installation fenceline. All tenant commands are asked to participate in the drill and ensure their personnel know the actions to take for a tornado as per their facility Emergency Action Plan. At 1000, the "All Clear" signal will be sounded over outdoor speakers to end the exercise. If you have questions, call the Emergency Management office at (757)322-2320.
