Naval Base Point Loma hosted the event at the location known as Ballast Point where a Spanish fort once stood. The event featured a reenactment of the battle between Fort Guijarros and the U.S. merchant ship Lelia Byrd, which had tried to sail away undiscovered with forbidden trade goods.

In January all eligible First Class Petty Officers (FCPO) took the Chief Petty Officer (CPO) exam. This was just one step toward the pinnacle of the enlisted career path and those that have gone before know how difficult the path can be. So to help FCPOs better prepare for the selection board, Master Chief Petty Officers from commands throughout Navy Region Southwest (California,Nevada,New Mexico,Arizona,Colorado,Utah) reviewed and provided invaluable advice on putting together effective board packages. This is deckplate leadership at work.

In support of the Navy Gold Star Program, San Diego Fleet and Family Readiness Programs hosted a painting event for Gold Star spouses at Admiral Baker Golf Course club house. The Gold Star program supports families of service members who have paid the ultimate price in service to their country. At this event spouses and their children painted a Hawaiian like scene while sipping their favorite drinks. Events like this provide an opportunity for Gold Star families to get together and for the Navy to show appreciation for their sacrifices.

Safety Message: The National Safety Council has designated April as Distracted Driving Awareness Month. Thousands of people die each year due to using cell phones to talk and text while driving. Although hands-free is legal in California, it still has risks associated with it. One text or call could wreck it all.

Locally, San Diego law enforcement are out in force specifically looking for persons texting/talking on cell phones while driving. Also the U.S. Department of Transportation is leading the effort to stop texting and calling while drivers are behind the wheel. Since 2009, they have held two national distracted driving summits, banned texting and cell phone use for commercial drivers, encouraged states to adopt tough laws and launched several campaigns to raise public awareness.

Join the National Safety Council the April in urging those you care about to; stop using cell phones while driving, stop texting while driving and understanding the dangers of the cognitive distraction to the brain cell phone use causes.

HONORING OUR VIETNAM WAR VETERANS

To honor our Vietnam War vets, NBSD took part in a couple of ceremonies honoring those who served during one of the most challenging wars in our history. Last year the Vietnam War Veterans Recognition Act of 2017 was signed into law, recognizing yesterday and every third Monday in March as Vietnam War Veterans Day.

Yesterday, the Navy Exchange and Commissary hosted a ceremony honoring Vietnam War veterans by pinning commemorative lapel pins provided by the United States Of America Vietnam War Commemoration onto Vietnam War veterans including our very own Commissary Officer, Rubin Barcelona.

On Wednesday, NBSD Commanding Officer Capt. Roy Love read a proclamation declaring renowned maritime war painter Richard DeRosset an honorary crew member of USS Kirk, a significant ship during the Vietnam War, which DeRosset painted depicting the ship at sunset during the war.
