For this week's #WorkforceWednesday, we are highlighting the Product Manager Network Modernization Secure Wi-Fi team: (from left to right) Michael Piesen, Mark Moran, MAJ Dawn Wyant, Michael Golden, Pam Etu and James Schliesske. The team is leveraging pilot units to implement its test-fix-test model to continue to improve the system and get it into the hand of Soldiers at a rapid pace.

Secure Wi-Fi uses a National Security Agency (NSA)-approved solution to securely provide wireless network capability to the command post. It not only untethers Soldiers and Commanders from their workstations with wireless laptops for improved collaboration, but more importantly, it significantly reduces command post set up/tear down times for increased unit maneuverability and operational flexibility. Following the relocation of a command post, units can turn on their Secure Wi-Fi hotspot and the network can come up first instead of last, in as little as minutes instead of hours, and Soldiers can stay connected longer before jumping the command post. The Secure Wi-Fi system is changing the way Soldiers fight by enabling units to relocate more freely and bring up network communications faster than ever before, enhancing the survivability and lethality of today's force. Hats off to the Secure Wi-Fi Team!

READ NEW ARTICLE: The 2nd Brigade Combat Team "STRIKE", 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) was the first unit to operate with new "lite" tactical network transport configurations -- the Tactical Communications Node-Lite (TCN-L) and Network Operations and Security Center-Lite (NOSC-L) -- at the Joint Readiness Training Center, at Fort Polk, Louisiana.

To support Joint Forcible Entry and other high mobility missions, the Army has integrated the TCN-L and NOSC-L onto lighter High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV) platforms, versus the previous five-ton Family of Medium Tactical Vehicle (FMTV) integration. Now these network assets can be rolled onto an Air Force C-130 aircraft or sling loaded by an Army CH-47 Chinook helicopter across the battlefield, to deliver robust network connectivity and network operations capabilities even in the most austere locations.

Prior to these new “lite” capabilities, units arriving to their objectives by air would have to wait for their heavy FMTV configurations to be driven in on a ground assault convoy. Commanders now have the option to air assault them in and establish the network and mission command capabilities much earlier in the fight.
