#MeetYourArmy- Staff Sgt. Miguel Alamo

Readiness is always at the forefront of a Soldier's mind. Whether it's excelling at physical readiness training or mastering their select job, it is easy to forget that Soldiers also have talents that extend beyond the Army.

Staff Sgt. Miguel Alamo, native of San Lorenzo, Puerto Rico and electrical avionics system repairer, assigned to 6th Squadron, 6th Cavalry - Six Shooters, recently completed a rotational tour at U.S. Army Garrison Humphreys (Camp Humphreys) with 2nd Infantry Division.
The Soldier, husband, father, former child actor shares his unique story with us.

#MotivationMonday- "Be ready to fight tonight, and keep fighting until we win."

Excellence is a mentality and there is a winning attitude that goes with it. This attitude is what keeps us motivated to continuously excel.

What motivates you to get through your toughest times?

The 2018 Eighth Army-Korea Best Medic Competition challenged the mental and physical toughness of seven, two-person medical specialist teams of from across the Korean Peninsula as they faced a series of obstacles and medical trauma-based test lanes at Camp Casey July 11-13.

Competitors were evaluated during the 72-hour event as they applied combat lifesaving skills in various realistic day and night, high-intensity scenarios.

These scenarios included treat a casualty in the CS (tear gas) gas chamber, carry a litter, drag a weighted SKEDCO rescue system, low crawl uphill, pass a stress-shoot range, pass a swim lane, pass an obstacle course, carry teammates more than 50 meters (simulating moving a casualty to safety), and a 4-mile, up hill march with weighted vests.

Day 3 events challenged competitors to apply their combat lifesaving skills in obscure nighttime scenarios, carry their teammates for over 50 meters simulating moving a casualty to safety, and march over 4-miles up-hill with weighted vests.

The afternoon concluded at the Camp Casey Theater where the 2018 Eighth Army-Korea Best Medic winning team was announced and trophies were presented to the 1st and 2nd place teams:

Congratulations, Army Nurse Cpt. Jacob Orrino and Combat Medic Sgt. William T. Barton, 121st Combat Support Hospital, 65th Medical Brigade, Yongsan, who won Best Medic/first place!

#ICYMI- The 2018 Eighth Army-Korea Best Medic Competition started today on Camp Casey and Camp Hovey.

The competition challenges the mental and physical toughness of each of the seven, two-person teams as they face obstacles and events July 11-13.

#Warriors had to overcome strenuous physical fitness challenges: a 1-mile run wearing an iotv, tire flips, a weighted SKEDCO drag, a buddy drag, iterations of the military press, countless weighted squats and an obstacle course.

Warriors also negotiated a grueling swim lane where, while blindfolded, they jumped in to a pool to retrieve a weapon at the bottom, removed the blindfold, swam the length of the pool while keeping the weapon above water, breast-stroke-swam the way back, as well as tread water for 2 minutes.

Stay tuned as these #Second2None Medic teams battle it out the next two days for the title of 2018 Eighth Army Best Medic.

#OTD in 1944, the 2nd Infantry Division initiated the assault on Hill 192 outside St Lo during the Normandy Campaign.

Hill 192 dominated the area of operations surrounding St Lo, France, which was the key communication center and needed to be secured in order to allow for the breakout of Normandy.

Stateside, the U.S. invaded Canada along the Detroit frontier. The invasion was repulsed and resulted in the surrender of Detroit. Detroit remained in British possession for two years.

#WarriorHistory- This week marks the #USArmy Warrant Officer celebration of 100 years of service.

Raider Warrant Officers served dinner in the Tomahawk DFAC on Camp Humphreys and held a ceremonial cake cutting.

On 9 July 1918, the U.S. Army Mine Planter Service was established by an act of Congress.

A total of 40 Warrant Officers were subsequently authorized to serve as masters, mates, chief engineers and assistant engineers on each mine planting vessel, thus becoming the first U.S. Army Warrant Officers.

#Warriors are you ready?

Beginning October 2020, all Soldiers will be required to take the new gender- and age-neutral test.

"The Army Combat Fitness Test will ignite a generational, cultural change in Army fitness and become a cornerstone of individual Soldier combat readiness," said Maj. Gen. Malcolm Frost, commander of the Army's Center of Initial Military Training. "It will reduce attrition and it will reduce musculoskeletal injuries and actually save, in the long run, the Army a heck of a lot of money."

What do you think of the New Test?

#OTD in 1918, the 2nd Infantry Division continued its preparation and movement into battle positions prior to the Battle of Soissons.

The Allies knew that the captured Soissons would cut the German main supply route in that sector and would eliminate the gains of the Spring Offensive.

The "Indian" was the official publication of 2nd Infantry Division, AEF from April to July 1919 while the 2nd Infantry Division was on the occupation of the 3rd U.S. Army Bridgehead at Koblenz, Germany.

It was truly fascinating to read the "Indian" because it made the year 1919 in Germany more relatable than an internet search for information; those were the #Warriors of the past talking to us.

To highlight a few pages: the first page introduces the 2nd Infantry Division as the 'Immortal' Division, noting accomplishments thus far; page 5 suggests areas in Europe where Soldiers taking 14 days of leave may have wanted to visit while in Europe; page 8 calls for submissions of articles from the different units; and there is an interesting story about how mules baffled the German population on page 11.

#OTD in 1776, the thirteen colonies claimed their independence from Great Britain, an event which led to the formation of the United States.

Thomas Jefferson, the author of the Declaration of Independence, combined a rich a history of ideas and presented them to the then King of Great Britain along with a list of grievances.

Today we celebrate the signing of the Declaration of Independence, which embodies what it means to be an American, and everything we hold dear.
