Recently the Submarine Base has experienced an increase in the number Sailors who have been impacted by IRS telephone scams. These sailors have lost a significant amount of money to this IRS scam. According to the IRS website, thousands of people have lost millions of dollars and their personal information to the IRS tax scams.
In an effort to combat the negative impacts these scams have on our sailors the Region Legal Service Office requested this advisory be distributed to the base. This advisory will lay out signs of a scam and ways to tell if a call is legitimate.
According to their website, the IRS will never demand immediate payment using any specific payment method. They will never request a gift card be purchased, or a wire transfer. They will not initiate contact with taxpayers by email, text messages or social media channels to request personal or financial information. In fact, the IRS will almost always mail a bill to your home of record before initiating any phone contact. They will never demand that you pay taxes without the opportunity to question or appeal the amount they say you owe them. They will not threaten to bring in local police, immigration officers or other law-enforcement to have you arrested for not paying. The IRS will not threaten to revoke your driver's license, business licenses, or immigration status. Threats like these are common tactics scam artists use to scare victims into paying them.
While the IRS scams are more common, there are various other ways scammers attempt to trick you into giving them personally identifiable information, monies, gift cards, or wire transfers. Anytime a person contacts you in an effort to get your financial information, access to accounts, or monies for reasons unknown to you, a red flag should be raised. If the caller is suspicious or misrepresenting themselves you should hang up the phone and report the incident to the IRS, the local police, or the appropriate authorities. If the call is established to be legitimate you can always take the necessary steps to make good on your debt afterwards. It is always better to be safe rather than sorry.
Please come into our office in the basement of Building 84, or visit the IRS website at https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/how-to-know-its-really-the-irs-calling-or-knocking-on-your-door-0 if you would like more information on how to protect yourself against scams.
