Today the NBSD Multi-Cultural Committee hosted a diversity event honoring the contributions of our LGBT service members. Our very own Chaplain Dawson shared a very heart felt story about his son who endured discrimination and harassment but had the support and love of his family and friends to help him cope. We also had a special guest speaker, Petty Officer Posey, a transgender Sailor who shared her story of what it has been like to start the process of transitioning from a man to a woman while serving in the Navy.
Our CO acknowledged the courage of LGBT Sailors to serve openly as significant contributors to the Navy mission. After Petty Officer Posey finished and thanked the audience for their time, our Multi-Cultural Committee put on a skit to illustrate some of the harassment LGBT service members deal with such as one Sailor telling another Sailor not to hang out with a Sailor because he is gay. The skit went on to demonstrate how unfair that type of treatment is and how destructive it can be to morale, especially when an LGBT Sailor is just as capable of fulfilling his or her role with Honor, Courage and Commitment.
Several Sailors and a civilian received various awards for superior service. The CO also promoted nine Sailors through the Meritorious Advancement Program (MAP) and the Naval Base San Diego Galley recieved the Five Star Accreditation award from Commander, Navy Installations Command.
Update July 5th: The theater is back to normal operation.
Update July 4 at 11:30: The theater remains closed today.
ATTENTION: The Naval Base San Diego Movie Theater across from Pier 2 will be closed today due to technical issues. Please stay tuned for updates on when the theater will reopen.
We appreciate all who serve.
