WE ARE READY! The Essex Amphibious Ready Group and 13th Marine Expeditionary U nit successfully completed their composite training unit exercise (COMPTUEX). COMPTUEX is the final pre-deployment exercise that certifies the combined Essex Amphibious Ready Group and 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit's abilities to conduct military operations at sea and project power ashore during their upcoming deployment in summer of 2018.

Congratulations to today’s ESSEX Warrior of the Day, LCPL Fortner of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma.

LCpl Fortner is currently serving as a radio operator for Battalion Landing Team 3/1, Lima Company, 4th Platoon. As a platoon radio operator, he is responsible for employing radios to send and receive messages. LCpl Fortner has participated in each phase of the 13th MEUs certification process. During pre-deployment training, he has become accustomed to ship life. He has took full advantage of every opportunity during training to get hands on and become more proficient as a radio operator. Additionally, LCpl Fortner successfully co-established satellite communications aboard the USS Essex in order to provide long range communication with units on battlefield.

Congratulations to today’s ESSEX Warrior of the Day, LCpl Sierra Walker of Champaign, Ill.

LCpl Walker is preparing for her first deployment. As the maintenance management non-commissioned officer in charge she continuously contributes to the success of the 13th MEU logistics team. LCpl Walker is responsible for ensuring accurate readiness reporting across the ARG related to MARES reportable ground equipment maintaining a 96% readiness. She has conducted in depth trend analysis across the ARG ensuring accurate GCSS-MC reporting on 11,599 modifications, 1, 257 preventive maintenance, and 314 calibration items. Her updates are directly inputted into the maintenance management section of the Commanders Unit Brief and the 13th MEU’s Commanding Officers Maintenance Readiness Brief. During her off time she has developed a schedule to develop her personal leadership skills by completing non-residence corporal’s course, commandant’s choice reading book reports, and four community volunteer events. Her continuous dedication to the mission and personal devotion to self-improvement has set the example as a leader for her piers to emulate.
